Setting Up a Desk Phone

Connect a physical SIP desk phone to SalesPartner and configure the caller ID and touch-tone settings it needs to work correctly.

App or Desk Phone — Your Choice

SalesPartner works two ways: from the app on your computer and phone, or from a physical desk phone on your desk. You're not locked into one or the other — use whichever fits how your team works.

Desk phones are a good fit for:

  • Front desk or reception phones that stay in one place
  • Shared phones for a conference room or common area
  • Team members who prefer a physical handset over a headset

A desk phone gets its own extension, just like a person does. Calls route to it the same way they route to the app.

Two Settings You Must Configure

Desk phones connect over SIP, a standard that most business phones support. Once your administrator has created a SIP extension and given you the login details, there are two settings on the phone itself that must be set correctly or calls won't work properly.

1. Caller ID

Set the phone's caller ID source to RPID-FROM. On most phones this is under Account → Caller ID Source (or similar). Without this setting, the phone shows your main business number for every call instead of the actual caller's name and number.

2. Touch-Tone (DTMF)

Set the DTMF type to RFC2833. On most phones this is under Advanced → DTMF Type. Without this setting, pressing keys during a call (like "press 1 for sales") may not register.

These two settings live in different menus, so check both — a phone can have one right and one wrong.

Where to Find These Settings

Menu names vary slightly by phone brand, but both settings are usually on the phone's own web interface (log in using the phone's IP address in a browser) rather than on the handset screen.

Look for:

  • Caller ID Source (sometimes labeled "Called" or "Remote Party ID") — set to RPID-FROM
  • DTMF Type, usually under an Advanced tab — set to RFC2833

If your phone was shipped and provisioned by SalesPartner, these settings are applied automatically and you don't need to touch them. This article is for phones you're configuring yourself.

Common Questions

Do I need a desk phone? No. The app handles calling for most teams. A desk phone is optional hardware for teams that want a physical handset.

Can I use a desk phone and the app at the same time? Yes. Calls to your extension can ring the app, a desk phone, or both, depending on how your administrator sets up routing.

Why is my desk phone showing the wrong caller ID? Check the Caller ID Source setting first — it needs to be RPID-FROM. If it's already set correctly and the problem continues, contact support.

Why don't the keypad tones work during a call? This is almost always the DTMF Type setting. Confirm it's set to RFC2833 under the phone's Advanced settings.

Which desk phones are supported? Any phone that supports standard SIP registration and the RPID-FROM/RFC2833 settings described here will work. Contact support if you're unsure about a specific model.
